How to edit videos with Claude in 2026

Short answer: Claude is not a video editor like Premiere Pro or CapCut, but in 2026 it can edit and make videos through three routes. 1) The Descript connector lets you edit real recordings by chatting: trim, remove filler words, add captions and publish. 2) Claude Motion turns your own charts, text and images into short animated videos you can download as MP4. 3) Claude Code with skills can run tools like FFmpeg and Remotion for more technical work. Add a skill with your editing rules and Claude follows your style every time.

Many marketers spend more time editing Reels than planning them. Cutting the "umm"s, adding captions, finding the one good 40 seconds in a 10-minute recording, then making a vertical version, a square version and a short teaser. It's important work, but it's repetitive.

So when people ask me "can Claude edit videos?", the honest answer is: not by itself, but yes through the right tools. Here is what actually works right now, what each option can and can't do, and how to set it up without any coding background.

First, how Claude "sees" a video

Claude doesn't watch your video the way you do. It works through what tools give it, mainly:

  • A transcript of everything said in the video
  • Still frames taken from the video
  • Commands to an editing tool, like "cut from 0:12 to 0:48" or "add captions"

That's why transcript-based editing is such a good fit. If you can edit a video by editing its text, Claude can do a lot of the work for you.

Route 1: The Descript connector (best for talking-head videos and Reels)

Descript is a video editor where you edit by editing the transcript. It has an official connector for Claude, so Claude can work on the recordings in your Descript account directly from a chat.

What it can do

According to Descript's own guide, Claude can import and transcribe media, find your projects, remove filler words, add captions, apply Studio Sound (cleaner audio), create highlight reels or scenes, and publish a shareable link.

How to set it up

  1. Open Claude and go to Customize → Connectors.
  2. Click +, browse the connectors directory and search for Descript.
  3. Click Connect, sign in to Descript and allow access to your Descript Drive.

Prompts you can try

  • "Open my latest project, remove filler words and long pauses, and add Studio Sound."
  • "Find the strongest 45 seconds about Meta Ads lead quality and make it a separate vertical clip with captions."
  • "Make three short highlight clips from this webinar recording, each under 60 seconds."
  • "Publish the final version and give me the share link."

What to keep in mind

  • It uses your Descript plan's allowances: importing uses media minutes, and AI edits can use AI credits.
  • It can't generate AI video, AI voices, avatars or dubbing through Claude.
  • Do the final visual check in the Descript app. Big files and fine visual tweaks still work better there.

Route 2: Claude Motion (best for explainers and animated charts)

Claude Motion is a newer feature, launched in beta on 8 October 2026 (source). You give Claude a chart, a report, a framework or some images, and it builds a short animated video from it.

  • How to start: type /motion in the Claude message box and describe what you want.
  • How it works: Claude writes code that animates your text, charts, shapes and images. It is not an AI video generator, so there's no fake footage or AI people. You can change any word, number or timing after the first version.
  • Export: download as an MP4, or open it in partner tools like Adobe, Descript, HeyGen, Runway and others.
  • Who can use it: at launch it was in beta for Claude Team and Enterprise plans. On Enterprise, an admin has to turn it on.

Marketing ideas: animate a campaign result chart for a client report, a 30-second "how our process works" video for your services page, or a simple explainer for a LinkedIn post. If you're a clinic, keep healthcare claims factual and within NMC guidance, even in an animation.

Route 3: Claude Code with skills (for people comfortable with a bit of tech)

Claude Code can run real tools on your files. For video, the two most useful are:

  • FFmpeg, a free video tool. Claude can use it to trim clips, convert landscape to 9:16 vertical, compress big files for WhatsApp, extract audio, or burn captions into the video.
  • Remotion, which builds videos from code. There's a Remotion skill that teaches Claude how to write correct Remotion code, useful for branded templates like "tip of the day" videos with your colours and logo.

You don't need to write the code yourself. You describe what you want in plain English and Claude writes and runs it. But you do need to be comfortable installing things and checking the output.

Why skills make the real difference

Without instructions, Claude edits the way it thinks is best. With a skill, it edits the way you want, every time.

A skill is a small folder of instructions (and optional scripts) that Claude loads when a task needs it. According to Claude's help centre, skills work on every plan, including Free, and need code execution turned on. You can find and add them under Customize → Skills.

For video, a simple "Reel editing" skill could include:

  • Length: Reels under 60 seconds, teasers under 15 seconds
  • Hook: the first 3 seconds must state the problem, no intros or "hi guys"
  • Captions: your font, colours, maximum words per line, Malayalam or English
  • Cuts: remove filler words and pauses over half a second
  • Ending: always end with your CTA, like "Follow for more" or "DM me 'AUDIT'"
  • Exports: 9:16 for Reels and Shorts, 1:1 for feed posts, compressed version for WhatsApp
The skill is where your experience goes. Claude does the repetitive work, your rules keep it sounding like you.

A simple workflow for one Reel

  1. Record one longer video on a topic, for example 5 to 10 minutes on "why your Meta Ads get fake leads".
  2. Upload it to Descript.
  3. Ask Claude (with the Descript connector and your Reel skill) to find the 2 or 3 strongest moments, cut filler, add captions and make vertical clips.
  4. Ask Claude to write the caption, hook text and hashtags for each clip.
  5. Review every clip yourself in Descript before posting. Fix anything that looks off.
  6. Optional: use Claude Motion to make an animated chart or explainer to go with it.

What Claude still can't do well

  • Judge visuals like a human. It can miss a bad frame, a blink or an awkward expression. Always review.
  • Replace creative editing. Smooth transitions, colour grading and effects are still faster in CapCut, Premiere Pro or the full Descript app.
  • Work for free on paid tools. Connectors use the other tool's plan and credits, so check your limits.

So, should you edit videos with Claude?

If you make talking-head videos, Reels or webinars, yes. Start with the Descript connector, because it gives the biggest time saving with the least setup. Add a skill with your style rules once you know what you like. Try Claude Motion if your plan includes it and you need animated explainers. Leave Claude Code for when you want templates and automation.

FAQ

Can Claude edit videos?

Not on its own like a video editing app, but it can edit videos through tools. With the Descript connector, Claude can trim recordings, remove filler words, add captions and publish a link by chat. With Claude Code, it can run tools like FFmpeg to cut, resize and compress video files. Claude Motion can create short animated videos from your own content.

Can Claude watch my video?

Not the way you do. Claude works with what tools give it, such as a transcript of the speech or still frames taken from the video. That is why the Descript connector works well: Descript transcribes the video and Claude edits it through the transcript.

What is Claude Motion?

Claude Motion is a beta feature Anthropic launched on 8 October 2026. It turns your own text, charts, shapes and images into a short animation that you can edit and download as an MP4. It writes code to animate your content, so it does not create AI footage or AI people. At launch it was available on Claude Team and Enterprise plans.

What are Claude skills and do I need one for video editing?

Skills are folders of instructions, scripts and resources that Claude loads when a task needs them. You don't need one to start, but a skill with your editing rules, like caption style, video length and how every Reel should open and end, makes Claude follow the same style every time. Skills are available on all Claude plans and need code execution turned on.

Is Claude better than CapCut or Premiere Pro for editing Reels?

No, they do different jobs. Claude is useful for the repetitive and text-heavy parts: finding the best clip, cutting filler words, writing captions and hooks, and preparing versions for different platforms. For fine visual work like transitions, colour and effects, an editor like CapCut, Premiere Pro or the full Descript app is still the better tool.
